The Duruthu Perahera is one of the grandest pageants in Sri Lanka from 1927. It is special to the Kelaniya Temple because it was the day Lord Buddha hallowed this ground on his first visit to the island. The Perahera on the first day is called the Uda Maluwa Perahera, which is on a low-key, but the second day’s procession is magnificent.

Navam Perahera is the only procession that takes place in the Colombo city reflecting Sri Lanka’s rich artistry and heritage. The perahera is of great religious significance and is an enthralling display with caparisoned elephants, dancers and drummers from the island’s three dance forms: Udarata, Pahatharata and Sabaragamuwa.

Maha Shivaratri is a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. It heralds the spring after the cold and dry winter, drives out ignorance, emits the light of knowledge and invokes the auspicious powers of Lord Shiva.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year otherwise called Aluth Avurudda in Sri Lanka, is the new year of the Sinhala and Tamil communities. The traditional new year dawns when the sun moves from the ‘Meena Rashiya’ to the ‘ Mesha Rashiya’. According to astrology this takes place in the month of April

Sri Lanka lights up for the sacred – most Buddhist festival remembering the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Lord Buddha. Buddhists traditionally participate in many religious activities in temples. Homes are adorned with bamboo framed lanterns decorated with colored paper. Large gleaming pandols and lanterns are displayed on roads throughout the country focusing on the life story (Jathaka Katha) of Lord Buddha. Stalls by the wayside generously distribute fresh food, cool drinks, tea, coffee and ice cream to the public who throng the streets to enjoy the spirit of Vesak. Poson Poya is an annual and most important festival for Buddhists which commemorates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka from the 3rd century. Festive activities are grandly celebrated in Anuradhpura which was one of the most significant and sacred cities that belonged to the ancient world and was the first Capital of Sri Lanka, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site

A festival procession in honour of god Skanda, also referred to as Kataragama Deviyo. Kataragama is interwoven around many faiths, thus this Perahera spectacle is one to look forward to for two weeks in the month of July / August.

The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all festivals featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire breathers and lavishly decorated elephants. The event lasts for ten days with a mixture of Kumbal and Randoli pereheras and ends with the water cutting ceremony

Elephant Gathering in Minneriya
The dry season in Sri Lanka means decreased water supplies for these massive mammals. This brings them from far and wide to drink from the Minneriya Tank. When the sun is setting, they begin to emerge starting off with one or two and building up to 300 at peak times. Here they graze, drink, play and even find mates and socialize.

Sri Pada climbing season commences on the ‘Unduvap’ full moon day (in December) and ends on the ‘ Vesak ‘ full moon day in the ensuing year. The sacred footmark at the top is 7,360 ft. above sea level. Many pilgrims make an effort to reach the summit before dawn to witness the rising sun which is spectacular.
